In our Fundación Educacional (Educational Foundation), different workshops related to Nutrition Education are carried out for the school community.

This programme’s main objectives are:

1. To provide scientific information in a clear, simple and understandable language adapted to the intellectual capacities of the different levels: kindergarten, primary and secondary.
2. To increase the kids’ intrinsic motivation so that they take an active role in their own diet.

Eating habits are developed from the earliest stages in life until the end of the adolescence and, in adulthood, they will mark definite preferences and aversions. These habits will positively or negatively influence their present health state and they might also represent causes of future health problems. The results obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Survey carried out between the years 2004-2005 showed that there were instances of nutritional inadequacy in all the social classes. The nutritional quality of the children and adolescents’ diet is poor, clearly monotonous and low in nutrients at every social and economic level.

Why do we choose schools to organise our educational activities in? Because a school:

• Represents the beginning of learning: it is the place where children go to learn.
• Makes it possible to include the huge number of children that attend school because they have to.
• Provides a natural laboratory in which children are grouped by age and socio-economic and cultural level.
• Allows many hours to closely interact with the kids.
• Is a place where some types of food are prepared in diners, kiosks, vending machines, as packed-lunches, among others.
• Produces a high impact and multiplier effect towards families, friends, etc.

Our workshops consist of a presentation of a theoretical framework related to a specific topic, adapted to the kids and teenagers’ intellectual capacities, using different visual aids. Next, we try to make them put into practice whatever they know or have learnt through a series of didactic activities related to the given topic.

The Nutrition Education helps and generates a general education if implemented properly.
